Choosing A New Boiler

There are a few key things to consider when choosing a new or replacement boiler. We’ll walk you through these to help arm you with all the information you need to decide.

How many people live in your house?new boiler installation

The reason this question is key is that if you opt for a boiler that’s too small, you’ll find your home isn’t adequately heated or isn’t supplied with enough hot water to meet your demands. Choose a boiler that’s too big and you’re likely to produce more energy than you need; resulting in increased bills and generating unnecessary emissions. Large families are likely to use lots of hot water, so a conventional or system boiler might be more appropriate in certain scenarios.

Keep following our questions to find out which is the better option for you. Smaller households are likely to use less heating and hot water and are likely to be better off with a combi boiler.

How many bathrooms do you have?

If you have several bathrooms that are often occupied at the same time, it’s likely that a lot of hot water is used at the same time.

On the other hand, combi boilers are great for smaller properties (houses or flats) which only have one bathroom. However,  when weighed up against system boilers, combi boilers have some small disadvantages.

For example, in homes with more than one bathroom, a slight decline in water pressure may be experienced if more than one appliance is using the boiler at any one time. That, even though, some combi boilers with a higher output can sustain enough pressure for 2 showers to run at once whilst having a similar flow rate.

What boiler manufacturer should I choose?

There are quite a few boiler manufacturers available in the UK, but some are better than others. At McQueen Heating Ltd, we mainly install Atag, Alpha, Baxi & Ideal boilers. We prefer these manufactures because they cater to different budgets and come with a 5 – 13 years parts and labour warranty.

That said though, we always provide our customers with 3 options when we replace their boiler; these come under the form of bronze, silver and gold packages. This system allows us to cater to the customer’s budget whilst offering them the best solution for their home.

Do you have free space, such as a loft available in your home?

When choosing your new boiler you may wish to have it moved to free up more space. With combi boilers and system boilers moving these from kitchens and airing cupboards into lofts can free up even further space. In some situations, this may not be possible but it’s always worthwhile to consider and ask your engineer if this is theoretically possible.

Why is it good to have an efficient boiler?

We know efficiency is important to everyone, whether you’re looking to reduce your bills or your carbon footprint. But did you know you can opt for a boiler that’s both efficient and economical?

Heating accounts for about 55% of your annual energy bills, so an efficient boiler makes a big difference. If you’re opting for a new boiler, you can enjoy a host of efficiencies right away. Modern boilers are more efficient for lots of reasons, but their main advantage is that they are all condensing boilers. Condensing boilers make your fuel go further. Improvements to boiler design mean they now condense to ensure as much heat as possible is converted into useful heat for your home.
